People in the past with bipolar disease have been labeled manic depressive, and called schizophrenic. Today, individuals with the same symptoms are diagnosed with bipolar disease. Bipolar disorder is a serious, chronic illness which causes shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function (Birmaher & Axelson, 2006). These individuals experience extreme mood swings. Bipolar disease is not easy to diagnose, and, the treatment may not be one that changes behavior immediately. Depression may be associated with Bipolar disease. Not any of this sounds upbeat or positive, yet, most all of us have experience moments that we feel very moody or depressed.
